Google Fonts for dyslexia — which free typefaces actually help?

Google Fonts hosts more than 1,500 typefaces, and almost all of them were designed with aesthetics — not reading accessibility — in mind. If you have dyslexia and you're looking for a free font that genuinely helps, the honest shortlist is much shorter than the catalogue suggests. This guide covers the fonts worth trying, what each one actually does, the ones that are actively unhelpful, and how to apply any of them to websites you don't control.

What makes a font work for dyslexic readers?

Before running through specific options, it helps to know what you're looking for. The research on dyslexia and typography is imperfect — most studies are small and subjective preference doesn't always match measured speed — but a few principles come up consistently.

Distinct letterforms. The pairs b/d and p/q are the classic stumbling blocks: they are mirror images of each other, and some dyslexic readers report that their brain spontaneously flips one into the other. Fonts that give each letter its own distinct shape — through asymmetric serifs, alternative bowls, or heavier bottoms — reduce that confusion. High x-height. X-height is the height of a lowercase letter relative to the capital. Fonts with tall x-heights make the most-read part of text — lowercase letters — larger without requiring a bigger point size. Open counters. The enclosed or partially enclosed white space inside letters (the gap inside an "e", the hole in an "o") should be generous. Tight, narrow counters make letters harder to distinguish, especially at smaller sizes or on low-resolution screens.

No single font is a cure, and what helps one reader may slow another. That said, some fonts were actually designed with readability and accessibility in mind — and those are worth trying first.

Lexend

Strongly recommended

Lexend is the most research-backed option on Google Fonts. Designed by Thomas Jockin in collaboration with the Lexend project (which drew on Bonnie Shaver-Troup's earlier work on visual processing and reading), it was built from the ground up to reduce visual stress and improve reading proficiency. The design choices — generous letter spacing baked in, open counters, tall x-height, carefully shaped lowercase letters — are not aesthetic accidents but deliberate responses to documented reading difficulties.

Lexend comes as a variable-weight family, meaning you get everything from thin to black in one font file. The 400 and 500 weights work best for body text. There are also six width variants (Lexend Deca through Lexend Peta) if you want tighter or wider character spacing than the default.

Atkinson Hyperlegible Next

Strongly recommended

Created by the Braille Institute of America and updated to "Next" in 2024, Atkinson Hyperlegible was designed for people with low vision — but the design decisions overlap substantially with what helps dyslexic readers. The key move is per-glyph differentiation: every letter that is commonly confused with another was deliberately reshaped to be unambiguous. The lowercase "l" has a curved tail. The "1" has a serif base. The "I" has serifs. The "0" has a slash through it. The "b" and "d" are clearly asymmetric.

The 2024 Next release added four new weights, improved the spacing, and fixed some rendering quirks from the original. It is the version to use when you have a choice.

Andika

Worth trying, especially for children and new readers

Andika is published by SIL International, an organisation with decades of experience designing typefaces for literacy — particularly for languages with complex orthographies. Its design goals are very close to what dyslexia-focused fonts aim for: maximum clarity of individual letterforms, deliberate disambiguation of easily confused pairs, and excellent legibility at the small sizes that appear in textbooks and workbooks.

It is a regular-weight roman; SIL publishes separate Andika Bold and Andika Italic files. The character set is exceptionally wide, which makes it useful for multilingual reading. The look is slightly more neutral than Lexend — some adult readers find it a little textbook-like — but for children learning to read, or adults who prefer a less styled appearance, it performs very well.

Nunito

Good choice, especially for UI and shorter texts

Nunito was not designed specifically for dyslexia, but its rounded, humanist letterforms happen to do several things right. The terminals (the ends of strokes) are rounded rather than sharp, which reduces the sharpness that can cause visual stress on high-contrast screens. The letter spacing is generous. The x-height is high. The bowls of b, d, p, and q are rounded and fairly open.

Nunito works well for shorter reading — news articles, product pages, dashboards — but its style is distinctly friendly and rounded, which some readers prefer and others find distracting. Nunito Sans (a separate Google Font) keeps the rounded terminals but removes some of the calligraphic quality, making it feel more neutral.

Open Sans

Solid general-purpose fallback

Open Sans is one of the most widely used typefaces on the web. It wasn't designed with dyslexia in mind, but Steve Matteson's humanist design gives it several properties that work reasonably well for dyslexic readers: an upright, clean design; open counters; a generous x-height; and neutral letterforms that don't carry much stylistic noise.

It's listed as "solid fallback" rather than "strongly recommended" because it doesn't go out of its way on letter disambiguation. The b/d pair is fine, but not as carefully distinguished as in Atkinson Hyperlegible. It also predates the current understanding of reading accessibility. That said, it is a large improvement over most default web fonts — Roboto, generic system sans — and if you're switching sites from whatever they ship with, Open Sans is a reasonable choice when Lexend or Atkinson aren't available.

Noto Sans

Best choice for multilingual reading

Google's Noto project exists to cover every Unicode character — the name stands for "no more tofu" (tofu being the blank rectangle that appears when a font doesn't support a character). Noto Sans is neutral and clean, not remarkable for dyslexia accessibility, but better than most default fonts and the right choice when you're reading content in multiple scripts or less common languages. If you're a bilingual reader with dyslexia, Noto Sans is often the only option that covers both scripts without inconsistency.

Fonts to avoid

Google Fonts has several categories that are worse than your browser's default for dyslexic readers.

Condensed or narrow variants. Condensed fonts squeeze characters horizontally, reducing the space between letter pairs and making it harder to distinguish shapes at a glance. Fonts like Barlow Condensed, Roboto Condensed, and anything with "Narrow" in the name should be avoided for body reading.

Thin or light weights as defaults. Fonts like Raleway Thin or Montserrat Light look elegant in headlines but create poor contrast between the letterform and the background at body text sizes. If you use a variable font, set the weight to at least 400 and ideally 450-500.

Decorative and handwriting fonts. Pacifico, Dancing Script, Caveat, and similar script or handwriting fonts are charming in headings but have inconsistent baseline alignment, overlapping strokes, and variable letter widths that compound the visual processing load for dyslexic readers.

Traditional serifs for screen body text. Fonts like PT Serif, Playfair Display, or Cormorant perform better in print than on screen, where sub-pixel rendering can blur the thin serifs. How to use these fonts on websites you don't control

The obvious limitation of this list is that you can only apply a font to a website if that website already uses it — or if you can override it. Most sites won't swap their brand font because you prefer Lexend.

A note on testing: font preferences are genuinely individual. The practical workflow

Start with Lexend — it has the strongest design rationale and the most intentional spacing. If Lexend feels slightly too engineered or you find yourself tripping over its rhythm, switch to Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, which is more neutral in feel. If neither works and you're primarily dealing with letter confusion rather than reading speed, try Andika. Use the others as fallbacks or for specific contexts: Noto Sans for multilingual content, Nunito for UI-heavy screens.
