Dyslexia-friendly iPhone and iPad settings — iOS accessibility guide

A lot of dyslexia accessibility advice is written for desktop Chrome. That's where the richest tooling lives — extensions, font overrides, full customisation. But most people do a large portion of their reading on a phone or tablet. If that device is an iPhone or iPad, there's good news: iOS has a deeper set of native accessibility features than Android does, and several of them are specifically useful for dyslexic readers. The bad news is that they're scattered across five different Settings menus and almost nobody knows they exist.

This guide goes through every setting that actually matters, in the order you should apply them. It also covers Safari's built-in reading tools, the apps worth installing, and the one honest limitation you need to know about.

The honest limitation upfront

iOS Safari does not support browser extensions. That means tools like LexiFont — which lets you apply OpenDyslexic, Lexend, and Atkinson Hyperlegible to every website in Chrome — are not available on iPhone and iPad in the same way. If font choice on arbitrary websites is your priority, a desktop or laptop running Chrome will always give you more control. (LexiFont works on any website in Chrome with a single click.)

That said, iOS gives you a surprising amount of leverage through system-level settings, Safari's Reader mode, and a handful of well-designed reading apps. For many people, the combination is genuinely good enough — and for reading ebooks, newsletters, and long-form articles in particular, it can be excellent.

Display and text size — start here

Go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size. This is where the highest-impact changes live.

Larger Text. Tap this and enable "Larger Accessibility Sizes." The slider now goes much further than the standard range. For dyslexic readers, font size is one of the most reliable levers for reducing reading effort — most people undershoot it. If you find yourself squinting or re-reading lines, drag the slider several notches larger than feels natural. The text will look big at first. Within a day or two, it stops registering as "big" and you just read faster.

Bold Text. Enables system-wide bold weight. The effect is mild — iOS uses a slightly heavier weight, not heavy bold — but it adds enough contrast against the background that many dyslexic readers find individual letterforms easier to distinguish. Worth enabling.

Button Shapes. Not directly a reading aid, but it removes visual ambiguity in apps by making interactive elements clearer. Less cognitive load spent figuring out what's tappable means more left for reading.

Reduce Transparency. Turns frosted-glass backgrounds into solid colours. If you find layered semi-transparent UI elements distracting while reading, this helps. Some readers are sensitive to the visual "noise" of translucent overlays in a way that links to the same contrast sensitivity issues associated with dyslexia. Worth trying if you find app UI visually busy.

Increase Contrast. Pushes more contrast between text and backgrounds across the system. Combined with Bold Text, this is the most useful pair of settings for readers who struggle with letter distinctiveness.

Background colour and colour filters

Some dyslexic readers — particularly those who experience visual stress or Irlen-type sensitivity — find that certain background colours reduce glare and improve letter stability. iOS provides two routes to this.

Display Accommodations → Colour Filters. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Colour Filters. Enable it, choose "Colour Tint," and use the Hue and Intensity sliders. A low-intensity warm tint (yellow-orange hue, 20-30% intensity) approximates a cream-tinted background for the whole screen — the closest iOS gets to what dedicated background colour tools provide on desktop. It applies to everything, including Safari.

Night Shift and True Tone. Both warm the screen's colour temperature. True Tone (available on most iPads and recent iPhones) adjusts dynamically to ambient lighting. Night Shift shifts toward amber in the evening. Neither is a substitute for a proper cream background, but they reduce the harshness of white screens — a common complaint among readers with visual stress. Turn True Tone on and set Night Shift to a warm setting 24 hours a day if white backgrounds feel uncomfortable.

Zoom — a different tool from large text

Most readers know about "Larger Text." Fewer know about the iOS Zoom feature, which is distinct and sometimes more useful. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Zoom.

Standard Zoom magnifies the entire screen by a fixed factor — useful for small-print elements (labels, footnotes, form fields) that you can't enlarge through font size settings. The more useful mode is Window Zoom: it creates a floating magnified rectangle you can move around the screen. Think of it like a digital reading magnifier. For readers who use a physical reading ruler or magnifier strip in print, Window Zoom is the closest iOS equivalent.

The difference between Zoom and Larger Text matters. Larger Text reflowes the text — it wraps differently, the layout adapts. Zoom keeps the original layout and blows it up, which can break line lengths. For most reading situations, Larger Text is better. Use Zoom for small-print elements or fixed-layout PDFs that won't reflow.

Safari Reader mode — the most underused tool on iPhone

Safari's Reader mode strips away navigation, ads, sidebars, and most layout complexity, presenting just the article text in a clean single column. For web reading, it's the highest-impact single feature on iOS for dyslexic readers — and most people tap it once, find it changed the font to something they don't like, and never use it again. The fix is to configure it.

When you're in Reader mode (the icon at the left of the address bar — it looks like two horizontal lines), tap AA in the top-left of the screen. This opens a panel with:

  • Font size: independent of the system-wide setting. Set it as large as you need for comfortable reading without eye movement across very long lines.
  • Font family: Apple provides eight choices. Atkinson Hyperlegible is one of them — an accessibility-focused typeface designed at the Lighthouse for the Blind with dyslexic readers' needs partly in mind, with unusually high letter distinctiveness. If you find standard fonts hard, try Atkinson Hyperlegible here first.
  • Background colour: white, sepia (warm cream), grey, or black. Most dyslexic readers who have issues with white backgrounds find sepia significantly more comfortable for long reading sessions.

Make Reader the default for specific sites. Long-press the Reader icon in the address bar and choose "Use Reader Automatically on [site]." Do this for news sites, Wikipedia, Medium, Substack, and any other site you visit regularly. Safari will open those pages directly in Reader mode without needing you to tap anything.

Reader mode cannot force a font like OpenDyslexic — Apple's font selection is curated. But the Atkinson Hyperlegible option, combined with a sepia background and generous text size, gets surprisingly close to the experience a desktop reader gets with a dedicated font-override extension. For people who do most of their reading in Safari, configuring Reader mode carefully is the most productive 10 minutes you can spend.

Speak Screen and Speak Selection — audio as a reading aid

Go to Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content.

Speak Selection: highlights a block of text, then a "Speak" button appears. iOS reads the text aloud. Useful for passages you've re-read twice and still can't hold the meaning of — hearing it simultaneously often breaks the loop.

Speak Screen: swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen (or use the accessibility shortcut) and iOS reads the entire visible screen from top to bottom. In Safari Reader mode, this is effectively an audiobook for any web article. The word-by-word highlighting is also a reasonable substitute for a reading ruler — it visually tracks position on the line.

Typing Feedback: also in Spoken Content, this reads characters and words back as you type. For dyslexic writers who make consistent letter-order errors, hearing what was actually typed (rather than what was intended) catches mistakes that spellcheck misses because the misspelling is another valid word. Worth enabling if writing is as much of a challenge as reading.

Reading apps worth installing

Native iOS settings get you far, but three app categories extend what's possible.

Voice Dream Reader (paid, one-time purchase or subscription). The most capable reading-and-listening app on iOS. It accepts PDFs, Word documents, web URLs, Instapaper/Pocket saves, and plain text. Font choice is wide — it includes OpenDyslexic. Speed control, pitch control, line highlighting, and word-by-word tracking are all configurable to a degree that most dyslexic readers find makes a tangible difference to comprehension. If you regularly read PDFs or long documents on your iPad, Voice Dream is the most practical investment on this list.

Instapaper or Readwise Reader (both free tiers available). Save articles from Safari, email, or anywhere else. Both apps display content in a clean reader view with full font-size and colour-background control. Apple Books (built in). For ebooks, Apple Books offers OpenDyslexic as a font option (under Settings → Accessibility → Per-App Settings, or directly in the Books font picker). There's a full guide to Apple Books dyslexia fonts and settings if you read ebooks regularly on your device.

Shortcuts and accessibility controls

One friction point with iOS accessibility is that the useful settings are buried. The Accessibility Shortcut solves this. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Accessibility Shortcut (at the bottom of the menu) and assign Colour Filters, Zoom, or Speak Screen. Triple-clicking the side button (or home button on older devices) then toggles that feature instantly.

If you switch between different lighting conditions — bright office, dimmer home, dark bedroom — assigning Colour Filters to the shortcut lets you toggle the tint on and off in half a second. This is meaningfully better than diving into Settings every time.

The iPad advantage for reading

Everything above applies equally to iPhone and iPad, but the iPad has one structural advantage for dyslexic readers: the larger screen accommodates larger text and shorter line lengths simultaneously. On a phone, increasing text size enough for comfortable reading often pushes line length past the point where tracking across the line becomes difficult. On an iPad, especially a 12.9-inch model, you can have a large font, a comfortable line length, and still see enough of the article to maintain context.

If you do most of your long-form reading on a phone and find it consistently difficult, this is worth considering. The difference is not subtle — reading comprehension research consistently shows that both font size and line length interact, and the iPad's canvas is simply more forgiving.

Split View on iPad also lets you keep a dictionary or note-taking app alongside whatever you're reading — useful for the working-memory demands of reading dense material, where looking up a word can cause you to lose your place in the source text.

For desktop Chrome: font overrides on every website

iOS is genuinely capable for mobile reading. But the one thing it cannot replicate is Chrome extension-level font control — the ability to swap every website's font to OpenDyslexic, Lexend, or Atkinson Hyperlegible automatically, without using Reader mode. If you split your reading between an iPhone or iPad and a laptop or desktop, configuring LexiFont on the desktop side removes the biggest friction point in that environment. A practical setup checklist

To apply everything in this guide at once, work through these steps in order:

  1. Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size: enable Larger Text (with Accessibility Sizes), Bold Text, and Increase Contrast.
  2. Display & Text Size → Colour Filters: enable, set to Colour Tint, warm hue, 20-30% intensity. Alternatively, turn on True Tone and Night Shift (warm, 24 hours).
  3. Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content: enable Speak Selection and Speak Screen.
  4. Settings → Accessibility → Accessibility Shortcut: assign Colour Filters (or Zoom if you use it).
  5. Safari: open any long article, tap Reader mode, tap AA, choose Atkinson Hyperlegible, Sepia background, large font size. Long-press the Reader icon to auto-enable on sites you visit often.
  6. Apps: install Voice Dream Reader if you read PDFs or documents; Instapaper or Readwise Reader for articles.

Six steps. Most of them take under a minute each. The result is a meaningfully different reading experience from the default iOS setup — not identical to a fully configured desktop, but considerably better than most people's iPhone or iPad currently is.
