Dyslexia-friendly Android settings: fonts, display, and reading apps
Android gives you more control over how text looks than most people realise. But the relevant settings are scattered across four or five menus, the naming varies by manufacturer, and the options that genuinely matter for dyslexic readers are not the ones Android markets most loudly. This guide works through them in roughly the order of impact, from the settings that help everyone to the ones that only matter for specific reading contexts.
This is deliberately a system-level guide. If you also want advice on reading in specific apps — Kindle, browser, document editors — the sections below cover those too. But getting the underlying Android display settings right first means every app benefits, not just the ones you remember to configure.
Why Android deserves its own guide
The general mobile reading guide covers strategies that apply across iOS and Android. Android is worth a separate treatment because the platform is more configurable than iOS in ways that matter for dyslexic readers: you can change the system font on many devices, override fonts in Firefox for Android using extensions, and access accessibility settings that iOS doesn't expose in the same way. The flip side is that Android is fragmented — Samsung's One UI, Google's Pixel UI, and other manufacturers each arrange these settings differently. The paths below are for stock Android (Pixel or Android One devices). Samsung equivalents are noted where they differ significantly.
1. Font size and display size
These are the two highest-impact settings and the first place to start. They live in the same place on most Android versions:
Settings → Accessibility → Display size and text
On Samsung (One UI): Settings → Display → Font size and style and Settings → Display → Screen zoom are separate menus.
Font size scales text within apps. Display size scales everything — text, icons, buttons, the whole UI. They interact, so changing both can have compound effects. A useful starting point for most dyslexic readers is to set font size to the second or third notch above default (roughly 120-130% of default) and leave display size at default. If text still feels cramped, nudge display size up one notch. Going beyond that often causes UI elements to clip and apps to feel claustrophobic.
A note on "best font size" for dyslexic adults: research reviewed in the best font size guide suggests that 18-20pt body text is a practical target for sustained reading on screen. Android's font size slider is relative, not in points, so you have to judge by feel — if you find yourself leaning towards the screen or squinting, go bigger.
2. Bold text
Settings → Accessibility → Display size and text → Bold text
This is a single toggle that adds a small amount of weight to all system text. It does not apply to every app — some apps render their own fonts and ignore the system setting — but it works in Chrome for Android, Gmail, the Settings app itself, and most system UI. The effect is subtle: enough to improve contrast between letterforms and background without making text feel heavy or crowded.
Bold text and font weight matter for dyslexic readers for a reason that is slightly counterintuitive. Thicker strokes make each letterform more distinct — the subtle differences between 'i', 'l', '1', and '|' become more visible, and the difference between 'n' and 'u' (which can flip) is harder to misread when the strokes are heavier. The bold toggle is low-risk to try. Turn it on, use your phone normally for a day, and see whether reading feels marginally easier.
3. Colour and contrast
Settings → Accessibility → Color and motion
Android offers several colour options here:
Color correction is designed for colour blindness, not dyslexia — skip it unless you have a co-occurring colour vision issue.
Color inversion inverts the entire screen: white becomes black, black becomes white. Some dyslexic readers find a dark-background-light-text layout easier to sustain. Others find it harder. The full guide on dyslexia-friendly dark mode covers the evidence in more detail, but the short version is: if glare or bright-white backgrounds cause visual fatigue, inversion is worth trying. If you find it disorienting, the problem is probably not background luminance — look elsewhere first.
High contrast text is a separate toggle that draws text with a hard edge, making it crisper against backgrounds. It is a underused option for dyslexic readers — the effect is similar to enabling sub-pixel rendering improvements. On some devices it makes a meaningful difference on websites with low-contrast body text.
4. Dark theme system-wide
Settings → Display → Dark theme
Unlike colour inversion (which flips everything including images), the system dark theme switches the OS and well-behaved apps to a dark background with light text, while leaving images and media untouched. Most modern Android apps respect it. Many websites in Chrome for Android respect it too when the "Force Dark" flag is enabled (more on that below).
For readers with visual fatigue, high-contrast sensitivity, or those who read in low-light environments, the dark theme is worth enabling permanently rather than using the "bedtime" schedule. The background colour question for dyslexia is nuanced — covered in the background colours guide — but pure white backgrounds on AMOLED screens produce a luminance that many readers find actively uncomfortable, and dark theme eliminates that without any other changes.
5. Changing the system font on Android
This is where Android varies most by manufacturer.
Stock Android (Pixel)
Stock Android does not let you change the system font through Settings. The system uses Google Sans (Roboto in older versions). You cannot replace it without rooting the device or using a third-party launcher. This is a genuine limitation. For reading on the web, the workaround is covered in the Chrome for Android section below.
Samsung (One UI)
Samsung is the exception: Settings → Display → Font size and style → Font style gives you access to several preloaded fonts and a "Download fonts" option that connects to the Galaxy Store. The free selection includes SamsungOne, Gothic Bold, and a handful of others. None of the major dyslexia-specific fonts (OpenDyslexic, Lexend, Atkinson Hyperlegible) are available in the Galaxy Store as of mid-2026, but Roboto and several sans-serif options are included and are a reasonable default.
If you have a Samsung device, the most practically useful thing you can do in this menu is select the largest available font weight variant — typically a "bold" or "medium" version — rather than trying to install a specialised font.
Other manufacturers
OnePlus (OxygenOS), Xiaomi (MIUI), and Oppo (ColorOS) each offer font download options in their display settings. The depth of the library varies. It is worth checking your manufacturer's font store to see whether any of the best fonts for dyslexic readers are available — occasionally a manufacturer partnership makes Lexend available.
6. Chrome for Android: font and display settings
Chrome for Android has its own text scaling setting that applies on top of Android's system font size. You can push it higher than the system allows:
Chrome → (three-dot menu) → Settings → Accessibility → Text scaling
The slider goes from 50% to 200%. At 150%, most body text on websites becomes comfortably large. The preview text in the settings panel updates live, so you can judge before committing. This setting is separate from the system font size and adds its own multiplier on top.
Force Dark mode for web content: in Chrome's flags (type chrome://flags in the address bar and search for "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents"), you can force dark mode on websites that don't natively support it. The result is imperfect — some images invert oddly, some sites lose their carefully chosen off-white backgrounds — but for long-form reading it can reduce glare significantly.
The important limitation: Chrome for Android does not support extensions. This means browser extensions that override fonts site-wide — including LexiFont, which works in desktop Chrome — do not run on mobile. The practical workaround for web reading on Android is either Firefox for Android (below) or using Chrome on your desktop with a Chrome profile that syncs your preferences across devices.
7. Firefox for Android: font extensions
Firefox for Android added broad extension support in 2023, and the library has grown substantially since. For dyslexic readers, this is significant: it means you can install a font-override extension on your Android phone and have it apply a dyslexia-friendly typeface to every website you read — in the same way LexiFont does on desktop Chrome.
To access extensions in Firefox for Android:
- Open Firefox for Android and tap the three-dot menu in the bottom bar.
- Tap Extensions then Explore more extensions. This opens the Firefox Add-ons site.
- Search for "font" or "dyslexia". You will find extensions that override body fonts with OpenDyslexic or custom fonts across all websites.
- Install and enable. The extension applies globally without per-site configuration.
The experience is not identical to the desktop. Some extensions that work on desktop Firefox behave differently on mobile — fewer options, no popup UI — but the core font-override function typically works. If you read most of your long-form content in a browser on your phone and you're willing to switch from Chrome to Firefox for that purpose, this is the most powerful single change available on Android.
8. Text-to-speech: Select to Speak and Read Aloud
Reading support on Android is not only visual. Two TTS options are worth knowing:
Select to Speak is in Settings → Accessibility → Select to Speak. Once enabled, you tap the accessibility button in the corner, then tap or drag across any text on screen — in any app, including images with text, PDFs, and screenshots — and Android reads it aloud. It is faster and more flexible than copying text into a dedicated TTS app. The voice quality depends on which Google text-to-speech voices you have installed; the "enhanced" quality voices are worth downloading if you plan to use this regularly.
Google's Read Aloud is built into Google Play Books and Google Docs on Android. For reading ebooks or documents, it is a clean experience: tap the headphones icon, and the app reads the current page while following along with a highlight. Combining a good reading font in the app with Read Aloud covers both the visual and auditory channels simultaneously — a strategy some dyslexic readers find significantly reduces cognitive load.

9. Reading apps with strong font support
Most reading happens inside apps, and the system settings above only go so far. Here is how the major reading apps on Android handle font configuration for dyslexic readers:
Google Play Books
Menu (three-dot icon while reading) → Formatting. You can change font (a handful of options including Lexie Readable), font size, line spacing, and margin width. The font selection is limited, but line spacing and margin control are genuinely useful — wider line spacing and shorter line length are both evidence-based improvements for many dyslexic readers. Kindle for Android
Tap the screen while reading → tap the "Aa" button. Kindle offers font, font size, line spacing, and margin controls, plus the option to install OpenDyslexic on supported Kindle titles (look for "dyslexia font" in the font selector — it is only available on some titles, not all). For purchased Kindle titles where it appears, this is the cleanest way to read in OpenDyslexic on Android without any extension.
Moon+ Reader
Moon+ Reader (Pro version) allows you to install custom .ttf and .otf fonts from local storage. This means you can download OpenDyslexic, Lexend, or Atkinson Hyperlegible as font files, copy them to your phone, and apply them to any ebook you open in Moon+ Reader. It is the most flexible reading app available on Android for font customisation. The setting is in Settings → Font & text → Font file.
Pocket / Instapaper
Both save-for-later apps offer limited font customisation. Pocket's font options are: Ideal Sans (default), Blanco (a serif), or Sans-Serif. None of the dyslexia-specific fonts are available. Line spacing and text width are adjustable. These apps are better as reading-mode layers on top of arbitrary web content than as font-first reading environments.
10. Samsung DeX and reading at a desk
If you use a Samsung device with DeX (the desktop mode that appears when you connect to a monitor or dock), Chrome and Firefox run in their full desktop versions — which means browser extensions run normally. LexiFont and other desktop Chrome extensions function correctly in DeX mode. For dyslexic readers who use their Android phone as a desktop replacement during work, this is worth knowing: your font preferences in desktop Chrome transfer without any extra configuration.
The limits of Android compared to desktop
Android gives more control than many users realise, but desktop still wins on one dimension: font override breadth. On a desktop with LexiFont installed, every website — regardless of how it is built — can be displayed in Atkinson Hyperlegible, Lexend, OpenDyslexic, or any other dyslexia-friendly typeface. On Android, the closest equivalent requires Firefox with an extension, and even then some sites resist override through inline CSS. The gap has narrowed considerably over the past two years, but it still exists.
If you read heavily on both devices, the most efficient setup is desktop Chrome with LexiFont Pro for websites, paired with Moon+ Reader or Kindle for ebook reading on Android. That covers the two highest-volume reading contexts without requiring per-device configuration of every app.
Putting it together: a practical starting point
If you have 10 minutes to improve your Android reading setup right now:
1. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Display size and text. Increase font size by 1-2 notches and turn on Bold text.
2. Enable Dark theme (Settings → Display → Dark theme).
3. In Chrome, go to Settings → Accessibility and push Text scaling to 130-150%.
4. If you read ebooks, open Kindle or Play Books and switch to the largest available line spacing option.
5. If you want full font control in your browser, install Firefox for Android and look for a font override extension.
Each of those changes is reversible in under a minute if it does not help. The most common mistake is making all the changes at once and not knowing which one made the difference (or which one introduced a problem). Try them in order, one per day, and you will know which settings are doing real work for you.
