Online shopping with dyslexia — making product pages readable

Shopping online looks simple from the outside: find the thing, buy the thing. But a typical product page on Amazon, ASOS, or any major retailer packs a product title in one font, bullet-point specs in another, a tabbed description section, a star-rating breakdown, and anywhere from forty to four hundred customer reviews — all in a layout designed to convert, not to be comfortable to read. For dyslexic shoppers, that combination is genuinely exhausting.

This guide breaks down exactly which parts of a shopping page are hardest and why, then gives you a setup you can put in place today that works across every retailer without any per-site configuration.

Why product pages are particularly hard for dyslexic readers

Most writing guides say that short paragraphs and bullet points are easier to read. For dyslexic readers that advice mostly holds — but online retail found a way to make bullets feel like a wall of text. Product specifications are typically displayed as a dense column of one-liners: "Material: 100% cotton. Machine wash at 30. Available in 12 colours. Pack of 3. Country of manufacture: Bangladesh." Each line is grammatically minimal, which means there are few context clues to help you stay oriented if you lose your place. And because the list is vertical and the items are short, your eye has to make many more left-edge returns than it would reading a normal paragraph.

That left-edge return — where your eye jumps back to the beginning of the next line — is one of the movements that dyslexic readers find most error-prone. When lines are very short and very similar in length, successive lines start to look the same, and it becomes easy to read the same line twice or skip one entirely. You might read "100% polyester" and walk away thinking you bought a cotton shirt.

Product titles create a different problem. Retailers use thin, condensed, or proprietary display fonts in the title to maximise information density on screen. These fonts often have poor letter differentiation — the letters 'a', 'e', and 'o' can look very similar in condensed styles. Scanning a title like "Karrimor Rapid 30+5 HipBelt Rucksack — Dark Navy/Steel" in a compressed sans-serif while simultaneously checking the price is exactly the kind of compound task that leads to reading fatigue within the first few minutes of a session.

The customer reviews problem

Reviews are where the reading load really compounds. A popular product can have thousands of reviews, with the top-rated ones shown first. Each review is written by a different person, in a different register, with a different approach to spelling and punctuation. There are no consistent cues to signal when one review ends and another begins — just a star rating, a name, and then freeform text that could run from two words ("works well") to eight paragraphs on the item's stitching quality.

The cognitive cost of switching between contexts is higher for dyslexic readers than for most. Every time you reach the end of one review and start another, you are re-establishing the text's rhythm, tone, and vocabulary. On sites where the review font is small and the line height is tight, this switching cost adds up fast.

The standard advice to "skim the reviews" also runs into trouble here. Skimming for a dyslexic reader often means reading each word at a pace that strips context, which leads to misunderstanding rather than summarising. If you have ever read a review as a recommendation and later realised it was a complaint — because you caught the adjectives but missed the negation — this is probably what was happening.

Typography on retailer sites is set for average eyes

Amazon, eBay, ASOS, John Lewis, and most other large retailers use default system fonts or their own brand fonts. These are chosen to be neutral and to load quickly; they are not chosen with dyslexic readability in mind. The body text in most retailer product descriptions is typically set at 14-15 px with line spacing around 1.3-1.4. Research on line spacing and letter spacing for dyslexic readers consistently shows that values in this range are too tight for comfortable reading — 1.5 is the practical minimum, and 1.6-1.7 makes a measurable difference to error rates and reading time.

Background colour is similarly unconsidered. Nearly all retailer sites use pure white (#FFFFFF) as the body background. Pure white creates the highest possible contrast with black text, which sounds good but is actually too harsh for readers who experience visual stress. The irradiation effect — where white seems to bleed into adjacent letters — is well-documented in readers with visual stress conditions. A soft cream, grey, or warm-tinted background reduces this significantly. You cannot change any of this by asking the retailer. But you can override it in your browser, sitewide, without touching the retailer's settings at all.

The browser approach: apply your preferred font to every shopping site

The most durable fix is to change the font across every website in Chrome using a font override extension. Reader mode on shopping sites — why it rarely helps

Browser reader modes (Chrome's Reading Mode, Firefox's built-in reader, Safari's reader view) are designed for article pages: they strip everything except the main text content and reformat it in a clean layout. On a blog post or news article, this is useful. On a product page, it tends to break badly.

Retailer product pages are not structured as articles. The "main content" heuristic that reader mode uses to identify the important text often strips out the specification table (treated as supplementary data), the reviews section (treated as user-generated noise), or the size guide (often in a modal). What you are left with is sometimes nothing but the product title and a partial description — not enough to make a purchase decision.

Practical strategies by shopping task

Reading product titles and specs

Product titles often front-load the brand name and model number before getting to what the product actually is. If you lose track mid-title, try reading it from right to left — this sounds odd but forces your brain to re-parse the title as separate components (brand, model, variant, size) rather than one long undivided string.

For spec bullets, read one attribute at a time and cross-check it against what you actually need before moving to the next. Writing down your two or three must-have attributes before you open a product page eliminates a large amount of reading — you are now scanning for specific words ("waterproof", "USB-C", "dishwasher safe") rather than parsing every line.

Reading customer reviews

Most retailer review sections let you filter by star rating. If you are trying to identify the main failure modes of a product, set the filter to one-star and two-star reviews and read those first. Negative reviews are usually more specific, more detailed, and more consistent in what they describe — which makes them easier to scan purposefully than five-star reviews, which tend to be brief and vague ("great product, fast delivery").

For longer reviews, the first and last sentence of each paragraph carries most of the meaning. Starting fresh from the first word of each new review keeps your anchor point consistent and prevents the context-drift that happens when you start reading a review from the middle.

If a specific detail matters — the return policy, the assembly difficulty, whether the colour matches the photos — use the page's built-in review search if available, or use Ctrl+F to search for the keyword across all visible reviews. This bypasses reading most of the review text entirely.

Checkout forms

Checkout flows are a separate challenge: you are switching between reading (the order summary) and writing (entering your address, card number, discount code). Comparison shopping across multiple tabs

Comparing two or three products by bouncing between browser tabs is one of the most cognitively expensive things a dyslexic reader can do while shopping. By the time you switch from tab A to tab B to check a measurement, you have often lost the detail you were comparing it against. The practical workaround is to keep a phone note or text file open alongside the browser with the key attributes of each product you have already read. You are not trying to remember the whole product — you are externalising the comparison so your working memory can focus on reading. If the attribute you care about is maximum weight load and product A says 120 kg, write "A: 120 kg" before you open product B. When you see product B's figure, you are comparing two written numbers, not two things held in memory.

When the font alone is not enough

Some shopping situations stack the cognitive load so high that a font change does not fully resolve the difficulty — particularly when the product is complex (electronics, medical equipment, insurance products), when you are shopping under time pressure (flash sales, event ticket windows), or when the site itself is poorly structured and the information you need is split across multiple pages and expandable sections.

In these cases, the most practical option is often to use the site's text as a starting point and then read a structured third-party review or summary — from a consumer organisation, a specialist blog, or a retailer that presents the same product in a better-organised format. Consumer review sites and specialist tech publications tend to use far cleaner typography and better editorial structure than the marketplace pages on large e-commerce platforms.
