Kobo vs Kindle for dyslexia — which has better font controls?
If you are choosing between a Kobo and a Kindle and dyslexia is part of your decision, the answer used to be simple: Kobo, because it shipped OpenDyslexic out of the box. The gap has narrowed since then — Kindle now allows custom font sideloading, and newer Paperwhite and Scribe models have added spacing and weight sliders. But simple is not always the same as equal. Here is what each device actually lets you do, where the differences matter, and what neither of them can do for you when you switch to reading on a screen.
Why e-readers in particular?
Dedicated e-ink readers solve some reading problems without any font tweaking at all. The surface is reflective rather than emissive — light bounces off the page the same way it bounces off paper, instead of shining directly at your eye. For readers whose visual stress is triggered by luminance (that sense of the page glowing too brightly), this alone reduces fatigue measurably. The catch is that e-readers are closed systems. You cannot install a browser extension on a Kindle or Kobo the way you can on a computer. Whatever fonts and layout controls the device ships with — or allows you to add — is what you have. That makes the built-in typography toolkit far more important than it would be on a laptop, where you could just install LexiFont and apply any font to every page.
What actually matters for dyslexic readers on an e-reader
Not all reading difficulty is the same, and not all e-reader typography controls address the same problem. Before diving into the device comparison, it helps to know which feature class matters most for you.
Font choice — swapping to OpenDyslexic, Lexend, or Atkinson Hyperlegible — is the most discussed intervention. It helps readers whose difficulty centres on letter confusion, particularly b/d/p/q rotation, and readers who find certain letterforms ambiguous. The evidence for OpenDyslexic is mixed on objective speed but consistently positive for subjective comfort among readers with letter-confusion difficulty.
Font weight is underrated. Thin letterforms are harder to track than medium-weight ones, and many e-readers default to fonts that look elegant on paper but are too light for readers with low vision or tracking difficulty. Line spacing and letter spacing matter more than most non-dyslexic designers realise. The British Dyslexia Association's style guide recommends line spacing of at least 1.5x, and the research on letter spacing (tracking) for dyslexic readers — particularly the work coming out of Padua in the early 2010s — found that extra letter spacing produced genuine decoding-speed improvements for children with dyslexia. Margin width and line length affect how much text your eye has to track per line. Long lines force more saccades (eye movements), increasing the chances of losing your place. A narrower column, all else equal, is easier to read.
With those in mind, here is how Kobo and Kindle compare on each dimension.
Kobo
Kobo's typography controls are, on balance, the more generous of the two. The core advantage is that Kobo includes OpenDyslexic as a built-in system font — you do not need to sideload anything, find a download source, or connect the device to a computer. It is in the font list alongside Kobo's own typefaces. For a reader who has never heard of font sideloading, this is not a small thing: friction matters, and a feature that requires no setup gets used.
Beyond font choice, Kobo's typography panel — accessible within any book — gives you independent sliders for font weight, font sharpness, line spacing, word spacing, and side margins. That combination is unusual. Most e-readers let you change font size and pick a font; few let you adjust word spacing without also changing font size. For dyslexic readers, word spacing is a significant variable — tighter word spacing collapses the white-space cues between tokens, making line parsing harder.
The font weight slider is Kobo's sleeper feature. It lets you thicken any font, including their default fonts, without switching typefaces. A reader who finds OpenDyslexic's letter shapes visually disruptive but benefits from heavier strokes can push up the weight on Kobo's standard fonts and get many of the legibility benefits without the aesthetic trade-off. The font weight research suggests this is more impactful than most readers expect.
Kobo also supports user-sideloaded fonts via USB: drop any TrueType or OpenType font into the device's fonts folder and it appears in the font list. This means you can add Lexend or Atkinson Hyperlegible if you want them, even though they are not included out of the box.
Kobo's stand-out features for dyslexic readers: OpenDyslexic built in, word spacing slider, independent font weight control. Weaknesses: some EPUB formatting overrides are imperfect, and the operating system interface uses relatively thin system fonts that do not benefit from the reader's font settings.
Kindle
Kindle's story with dyslexia-friendly fonts has improved significantly over the past few firmware cycles. Current Kindle devices — Paperwhite, Colorsoft, and Scribe — allow custom font sideloading: connect the device to a computer, open the Fonts folder that appears in the file tree, and drop in any TrueType or OpenType font. Restart the device and the font appears in the font picker. OpenDyslexic, Lexend, and Atkinson Hyperlegible can all be installed this way.
The sideloading process takes about two minutes once you know it exists, but it is meaningfully less accessible than Kobo's one-tap built-in option. A reader who picks up a Kindle without already knowing about the workaround may not discover it for months, or ever.
Kindle's built-in typography panel gives you font size, bold (a single on/off toggle rather than a continuous slider on most models), line spacing (three preset levels), and margins (three preset levels). Newer Kindle firmware has added a font weight slider to some models, narrowing the gap with Kobo, but the controls remain less granular. There is no independent word spacing adjustment in the standard Kindle reading interface.
Where Kindle has an edge is in its broader content ecosystem. Kindle's store is the largest in the world, and Kindle apps exist on every major platform — iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and browser. Kindle's stand-out features for dyslexic readers: large content library, font sideloading (once you know about it), improving spacing controls on newer firmware. Weaknesses: no word spacing slider, bolder weight requires enabling a toggle rather than dialling in a specific weight, OpenDyslexic is not built in.

The case for Kobo
If your reading difficulty centres on letter shape confusion, word spacing, or font weight, Kobo is the stronger choice. The word spacing slider alone is the kind of feature that sounds minor until you use it: many dyslexic readers find that slightly increased word spacing — just enough to create clearer gaps between tokens — reduces line-parsing effort noticeably. The spacing research supports this. Having that control at your fingertips in the reading interface, rather than baked in at publication time, is genuinely useful.
Kobo's OpenDyslexic implementation is also worth noting. The font renders clearly at normal reading sizes, and the device's sharpness slider can compensate for the slight blurriness that some readers perceive in OpenDyslexic at smaller point sizes — a problem that fixed-setting devices cannot address. One more Kobo advantage: it integrates with Overdrive and Libby, the library lending platforms used by most public library systems. Borrowing EPUB books from your library and reading them on a Kobo with full typography control is a genuinely good setup for heavy readers who do not want to pay full price for every title.
The case for Kindle
If you are already invested in Amazon's ecosystem — Kindle Unlimited, a large purchased library, or Audible integration — the Kindle makes sense despite its weaker typography defaults. The font-sideloading process is not difficult once you do it once, and most of the core benefits (a dyslexia font, enlarged text, increased line spacing) are achievable. The Kindle Scribe, Amazon's larger-format device, offers a bigger reading surface that reduces the need to zoom in as far, which many readers find useful.
Kindle's cross-platform apps also matter if you read across devices. If you start a book on your Kindle Paperwhite and want to continue on your iPad, the Kindle app on iOS preserves your position and supports font changes of its own. Kobo's iOS and Android apps exist but are less feature-complete.

What about Apple Books and Google Play Books?
Neither Apple Books nor Google Play Books ships on a dedicated e-ink device, so they are really phone and tablet reading apps rather than e-reader alternatives. On an iPad or iPhone, Apple Books lets you pick from a curated list of fonts and adjust size and spacing, but the selection is limited and does not include dedicated dyslexia fonts out of the box. (iOS accessibility settings can help here — enabling larger text and bold text system-wide affects Books, as does switching to a system font like San Francisco which is designed with legibility in mind.)
Google Play Books on Android offers a similar set of controls — font size, line spacing, and a small font selection — without dedicated dyslexia font support. Both apps pale next to what you can do on a laptop with a browser extension: the control is much finer, and the font selection is unlimited.
When neither device is enough
E-readers are good for books. They are not good for articles, research papers, newsletters, or anything that lives on the web. If a significant portion of your reading happens in a browser — news, documentation, email, long-form writing — an e-reader does not solve that problem. The short verdict
For the best built-in dyslexia support, Kobo wins. OpenDyslexic out of the box, a word spacing slider, and a continuous font weight control give you more to work with than Kindle's defaults.
If you are already in the Amazon ecosystem, Kindle is still usable. The font sideloading process takes five minutes and gets you to roughly the same place on font choice, even if word spacing control remains a gap.
For web reading, neither replaces a good browser extension.
The most important variable, though, is not which device wins a feature chart — it is which device you will actually use. An e-reader that sits in a drawer because the purchase felt like a commitment does not help anyone read more. If you can try both in a shop or borrow one from a library or a friend first, do that before buying.
